We leave by bus from the city of Cusco at 06.00 hrs in the morning on our way to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing Chinchero and having as a backdrop the snow-covered Urubamba mountain range. After almost two hours we reach the Inca village of Ollantaytambo, where our team of porters will join us before we continue to the trail head at the spot known as Piscacucho or Kilometre 82.
After passing the control points for access to the park we will be in complete contact with nature. Along this section of the trail we will encounter a number of archaeological sites, the most important of which is Llactapata. At midday the group halts for a rest and lunch. Finally, after a short day's walking, we reach the village of Huayllabamba, where we will make our first camp and where you can see the snow covered peaks of the Cordillera of Urubamba, including the Wakay Willka or Verónica Mountain. (5.59 miles trekking this day). L,D
This is the most demanding day's trekking. Our team of porters and guides will set the pace, making sure that the whole group makes the first pass of this route at Warmi Wanuska (Dead Woman's Pass in Quechua) at 13,779.53 feet above sea level, where we will have an unbelievable view of the whole area. From here the descent takes us to our second campsite in the Pacaymayo valley at 11,482.94 feet. Today we're going to trek 7.46 miles. B,L,D.
This day we walk along an authentic Inca highway: a pathway built by the Incas and not the result of restoration, for it has resisted the passage of time. At seven thirty, after breakfast, we continue our trek towards the second pass on this route, Runkuraqay (13,123.36 ft) visiting along the way the ruins of Sayaqmarca and Qonchamarca and continuing over the 12,467.19 feet, pass to the ruins of Phuyupatamarca, that means "Town in the clouds" which is one of the most beautiful examples of Inca architecture on the Inca Trail. After lunch we will continue descending to the last campsite at 9,022.31 feet, very close to the beautiful archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, which means "Forever Young" and is named because there are a variety of pink orchids growing here. (9.94 miles walking this day). B,L,D.
Very early, before sunrise, breakfast will be served, and we will bid farewell to our team of porters and cooks to continue our hike as far as the Sun Gate, Inti Punku, from where we will get our first view of the imposing lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. Our guide will take us on a tour of this mythical city and at midday we will find ourselves in the village of Aguas Calientes where, after lunch, we will take the train to Cusco. This day we hike 3.11 miles. B. Degree of difficulty: 3. Duration: 4 days and 3 nights, 5 to 6 hours walking each day, 3 nights camping.
